What is Roll Forging?

  • Roll forging, also known as hot forge rolling, is a metalworking process that utilizes rotating rolls to shape a metal workpiece into a desired form.
  • It falls under the category of forging processes, though it differs from traditional forging methods due to its continuous nature.
  • Unlike traditional forging, which involves discrete strikes or presses, roll forging involves the workpiece being continuously fed through a series of rotating rolls.

Roll Forging Process

Roll forging is a versatile and efficient manufacturing process that produces high-quality components for a wide range of applications. Its continuous nature, near-net-shape capabilities, and improved surface finish make it a valuable technique in various industries.

Roll forging process typically involves the following steps:

1. Billet Preparation: The starting point for roll forging is a metal billet, a piece of metal stock that has been cut to the appropriate size and shape. The billet is typically made from a high-quality steel or alloy.

2. Billet Heating: The billet is heated to a high temperature, typically between 1800°F and 2400°F (980°C and 1300°C), in a furnace. This temperature is necessary to make the metal soft and malleable enough to flow into the desired shape without cracking or breaking.

3. Roll Preparation: While the billet is heating, the rolls are prepared. The rolls are made from hardened steel or tool steel and are designed to create the desired shape of the forged component. The rolls are typically arranged in a series, with each pair of rolls progressively shaping the workpiece.

4. Roll Forging: Once the billet is heated and the rolls are prepared, the roll forging process begins. The billet is fed into the first pair of rolls, and then it is progressively fed through the subsequent pairs of rolls. The pressure and rotation of the rolls force the metal to flow into the desired shape.

5. Trimming and Finishing: After roll forging, the excess metal from the flash (the material that flows out of the rolls) is trimmed away. The forged component may also undergo additional finishing processes, such as heat treatment or machining, to achieve the desired properties and dimensions.
