What is Metal Extrusion?

  • Metal extrusion is a manufacturing process in which a metal billet (a solid cylinder of metal) is forced through a die to create a continuous, shaped product.
  • Metal extrusion is a powerful manufacturing process that can be used to create a wide variety of products with a wide range of properties. It is a critical process in the production of many everyday products.

Metal Extrusion Process

Metal extrusion is a high-volume manufacturing process in which a metal billet (a solid cylinder of metal) is forced through a die to create a continuous, shaped product. The process can be used to create a wide variety of products, including pipes, tubing, bars, rods, and profiles.

The metal extrusion process involves several steps, which can be summarized as follows:

1. Billet Preparation: The metal billet is prepared by being cut to the desired length and surface finish. The surface of the billet should be free of impurities and defects that could affect the extrusion process.

2. Heating and Loading: The billet is heated to a temperature that makes it soft and workable. The heating temperature depends on the type of metal being extruded. Once heated, the billet is placed into the extrusion container.

3. Billet Piercing: A piercing rod is used to pierce the end of the billet, creating a small opening. This opening will allow the metal to flow through the die during the extrusion process.

4. Extrusion: The extrusion ram applies a compressive force to the billet, forcing it through the die. The metal flows through the die opening and takes on the shape of the die. The speed of extrusion depends on the type of metal being extruded and the desired properties of the product.

5. Cooling and Handling: As the extruded product exits the die, it is cooled by air or water to solidify into the desired shape. The cooling process is carefully controlled to ensure the product retains the desired dimensions and properties. The extruded product, also known as the extrudate, is then pulled away from the die by a set of rolls or a conveyor belt.

6. Cutting and Finishing: The extrudate is cut to length or coiled for further processing. The extruded product may also undergo additional processing steps, such as straightening, heat treatment, or surface treatment.
