  • In ECG, a rotating grinding wheel acts as a cathode (negative electrode) and the workpiece acts as an anode (positive electrode). An electrolyte solution is flushed through the gap between the grinding wheel and the workpiece.

Electrochemical Grinding process

Electrochemical grinding, also known as electrolytic grinding or enotic machining, is a precision machining process that removes material from the surface of a workpiece by combining the principles of electrochemical machining (ECM) and conventional grinding.

In this process, the workpiece is made the anode, while the grinding wheel acts as the cathode. An electrolyte solution is introduced between the workpiece and the grinding wheel, and a DC current is applied to the system. This causes the workpiece material to dissolve electrochemically, while the grinding wheel mechanically removes the dissolved material.

The electrochemical grinding process involves the following steps:

1. Preparation: The workpiece is cleaned and prepared for machining. The electrolyte solution is also prepared, typically consisting of an aqueous solution of salts and other additives.

2. Set up: The workpiece and grinding wheel are mounted on the ECG machine. The electrolyte solution is pumped into the machining zone.

3. Machining: The DC current is applied to the system, and the grinding wheel is rotated. The workpiece material is dissolved electrochemically, and the dissolved material is removed by the grinding wheel.

4. Finishing: The machining process is monitored and controlled to achieve the desired shape and surface finish.
